About Tutankhamun
Tutankhamun was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty who ruled during the 14th century BC. He became king at a young age and is believed to have reigned for about nine years. Although his reign was relatively short, he is one of the most famous pharaohs in history because his tomb was discovered largely intact in the Valley of the Kings by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922.

Tutankhamun's funerary mask is one of the most recognizable artifacts from ancient Egypt. Made primarily of gold and inlaid with materials such as lapis lazuli, quartz, obsidian, and colored glass, the mask covered the head and shoulders of the king's mummy. It depicts an idealized version of Tutankhamun with the traditional royal nemes headdress, a false beard, and the symbols of kingship, the cobra and the vulture on his forehead. The mask was designed as a sacred object intended to protect him in the afterlife.
