About Two Jolly Cones
Two Jolly Cones is an oil painting on panel created in 2002 by Wayne Thiebaud, who was nearly 80 at the time. It continues a theme he had been exploring since the 1960s: everyday objects, such as pastries and ice cream cones, rendered with vivid colors and thick impasto. The ice cream cones, presented as small, almost posed subjects, evoke the abundance and simple pleasures of postwar American culture. Thiebaud, however, saw in ice cream a fleeting joyβ€”one of brilliance and liveliness destined to fadeβ€”which ties his work to the long tradition of still life as a meditation on the passage of time.

About Wayne Thiebaud
Wayne Thiebaud is an American painter who initially worked as a commercial artist and animator (notably for Walt Disney Studios) before turning to teaching art at the university level, a career he pursued for decades. His style, often associated with Pop Art due to his interest in everyday and commercial objects, nevertheless differs from it in its pictorial approachβ€”which is closer to realismβ€”and his fascination with light, shadow, and the texture of the paint itself."
