About In the Shadow of the Tree
This work is representative of Helen McNicoll's creative universe: a scene sketched outdoors featuring a female figure, a mother performing a simple everyday activity. The illustration of motherhood becomes a pretext for experimenting with light. In the shadow of the Tree is composed mainly of touches of green, yellow, and white. A dark spot stands out from the whole and draws the eye to the center. The entire composition is organized around the figure, with curved lines (pram and parasol) enveloping the mother and her baby. This luminous and harmonious painting exudes an atmosphere of calm and well-being.
About Helen McNicoll
Helen Galloway McNicoll RBA (1879-1915) was a Canadian impressionist painter. She was one of the most notable women artists in Canada in the early twentieth century and achieved considerable success during her decade-long career. McNicoll played an important role in popularizing Impressionism in Canada, at a time when it was still relatively unknown, with her lively representations of rural landscapes, intimate child subjects and modern female figures.
