About Angle Peel and Sainte-Catherine
Angle Peel and Sainte-Catherine shows the nightlife of downtown Montreal in the late 1940s. Adrien Hébert became interested in the bustling, feverish life of Montreal's streets in the mid-1920s. His bird's-eye views often frame the scene at the intersection of two thoroughfares, using a play of diagonals to emphasize the dynamism of the subject: here, the curbs, tracks, and streetcars. This image of the city at night is enhanced by the shiny pavement reflecting the light from the storefront windows.

About Adrien Hébert
Adrien Hébert (1890-1967) was a painter who has been called the first interpreter of Quebec modernity and was known as the urban painter of Montreal. Even though he was born in Paris, his parents were both canadians and Montreal always had a special place in his heart. He spent the majority of his career painting the streets and various landscapes of this city through a refined and direct approach.
