About Bestiary 26th
Alfred Pellan’s Bestiary 26th bursts with color, imagination, and vitality. This surreal and playful composition invites viewers into a fantastical menagerie where human and animal forms merge in a dreamlike harmony. The painting features a vivid parade of hybrid creatures—dogs, horses, cats, and imaginary beasts—interwoven with expressive human faces. Rendered in saturated hues of turquoise, crimson, orange, and lime, each figure seems to pulse with energy and emotion.

Pellan’s characteristic style shines through: bold outlines, rhythmic composition, and a sense of joyous chaos that blurs the boundaries between species and personalities. The contrasting background of black, white, and gray further amplifies the vibrancy of the figures, giving the scene both depth and theatricality.

About Alfred Pellan
Alfred Pellan (1906-1988) was one of the pioneers of modern art in Quebec. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Quebec City and later in Paris, he absorbed the influences of European avant-gardes — Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism — to develop a vibrant and highly personal artistic language. Upon returning to Montreal in 1940, he played a key role in opening Quebec’s art scene to modernity.  His work, marked by vitality and imagination, gained recognition both in Quebec and abroad.
