About Yan Q.C.I.
Emily Carr’s Yan Q.C.I. captures the striking beauty and quiet dignity of a Haida village site on Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands - Q.C.I). The painting portrays a row of towering totem poles standing against a backdrop of lush greenery, open sky, and shimmering sea. Carr’s expressive brushwork and vivid use of color evoke both the vitality of the landscape and the deep cultural significance of the Indigenous monuments she depicted.
Through bold, rhythmic strokes and vibrant contrasts of blue, green, and red, Carr celebrates the spiritual connection between nature and Indigenous heritage. Yan Q.C.I. exemplifies her lifelong devotion to recording and honoring the art, architecture, and presence of the First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, while also reflecting her modernist sensibility and reverence for the land.
About Emily Carr
Emily Carr (1871-1945) was a Canadian artist who was inspired by the monumental art and villages of the First Nations and the landscapes of British Columbia. She also was a vivid writer and chronicler of life in her surroundings. Carr's keynote paintings were not widely known in Canada at first. But her stature as one of Canada's most important artists continued to grow. Today, she is considered a cherished figure of Canadian arts and letters.
