About Starry Night

Painted by Vincent van Gogh in June 1889,Β The Starry NightΒ is widely regarded as the Dutch painter’s magnum opus. It is, along with Leonardo’sΒ Mona Lisa, one of the most recognized paintings in Western Art.

The view depicted in this work is from the east-facing window of Van Gogh’s asylum room in Saint-RΓ©my-de-Provence, with the addition of an imaginary village.Β The Starry NightΒ is the only nocturne painting in the series of views from his bedroom window.

About Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh (born March 30, 1853, Zundert, Netherlandsβ€”died July 29, 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris, France) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.

In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They includeΒ landscapes,Β still lifes,Β portraitsΒ andΒ self-portraits, and are characterized by bold colors and dramatic, impulsive and expressiveΒ brushworkΒ that contributed to the foundations ofΒ modern art. He was not commercially successful, and his death at 37 came after years of mental illness, depression and poverty.
