About Théophile Steinlen
Théophile Steinlen (1859–1923) was a Swiss artist who became a naturalized French citizen and settled in Montmartre in the 1880s, where he frequented the cabarets and bohemian circles that profoundly influenced his work. A painter, illustrator, and lithographer, he excelled in the art of poster design and press illustration, sensitively depicting the daily life of the Parisian working class, street scenes, laborers, and the marginalized members of society in his time. He was also a passionate observer of cats, which he depicted throughout his career with remarkable tenderness and precision, making them a recurring motif in his graphic work. His style, at the crossroads of Art Nouveau and social naturalism, has made him an indispensable figure in the history of French illustration and poster art.
