AboutΒ Starry Night Over the RhΓ΄ne
Starry Night Over the RhΓ΄neΒ is one ofΒ Vincent van Gogh's paintings ofΒ ArlesΒ at night.
Enthralled with the rich colors of the night and the effect of both natural and artificial light on the nocturnal landscape, Van Gogh realisedΒ Starry Night over the RhΓ΄neΒ in 1888, just steps away from the Yellow HouseΒ on the Place Lamartine.
This serene view from the banks of the RhΓ΄ne River features a rich palette of blue: Prussian blue, ultramarine and cobalt. The city gas lights glimmer an intense orange and are reflected in the water while luminous stars twinkle against a velvety night sky.Β Two lovers blithely stroll along the river in the foreground.
Painted before his stay at the asylum,Β Starry Night Over the RhΓ΄neΒ illustrates his distinctive approach to painting nocturnal scenes and captures a rare moment of calm in the chaotic final years of his life.
