About The Creation of Adam

The Creation of Adam c.1508-1512 by Michelangelo is arguably the most famous fresco in the Sistine Chapel, if not in modern art. The painting is based on the biblical story of creation which depicts God breathing life into Adam, the first man created, in the Book of Genesis. It is considered one of the most iconic images in European art history.

Michelangelo broke the boundaries of creation paintings with this piece, boldly depicting God as an elderly man, accessible and close to his creation as he reaches out to Adam, passing the spark of life to humanity. Their fingers do not touch, signifying the gap between Man and God. The man’s image appears a mirror reflection of God, which symbolises God creating man in his own image and likeness.

About Michelangelo

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (born March 6, 1475, Caprese, Republic of Florence, Italy – died February 18, 1564, Rome) was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, and poet who is universally regarded as one of the greatest artists in history. His most important works – the Sistine Chapel ceiling fresco, the anatomically flawless David and divine Pietà - are among the most famous in the world.
