About Flaming June
Painted in 1895, during the final year of Frederic Leighton’s life, Flaming June was first exhibited at the Royal Academy’s summer exhibition in London, where it received an almost unanimous critical acclaim.
The work disappeared from public view in the 1930s and was not rediscovered until the 1960s. Put up for auction shortly thereafter, at a time when Victorian painting was out of favor, it failed to sell despite a modest reserve price of about $140. It was subsequently acquired by the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico, where it remains today.

About Frederic Leighton
Born in Scarborough on December 3, 1830, Frederic Leighton was a British Victorian painter, draftsman, and sculptor whose works depicted historical, biblical, and classical subjects in an academic style. In 1896, he became the first painter to be created a peer, with the title of Baron Leighton of Stretton. He died the day after his creation, on January 25, 1896, and his hereditary peerage thus ended after only one day of existence, a record in the history of the British peerage.
