About Vincent van Gogh Known for his bold, brilliant paintings and precarious mental health, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art, forever known as one of the greatest artists of the modern era.
Vincent Willem van Gogh was born in the Netherlands on March 30, 1853. He shared a fiercely strong bond with his brother, Theo, an art dealer who supported him both financially and emotionally. They exchanged hundreds of letters over the course of their lives.
Van Gogh’s finest works were produced in less than three years. Dominated by vivid hues applied with impassioned, if not frenetic, brushstrokes, his singular technique denotes a forceful expression of emotion through color.
In all, Van Gogh completed more than 2,100 works, consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings and sketches during his decade-long career. While he only ever sold one painting in his lifetime, Van Gogh’s works are now considered priceless.
